1 HENRY DAVID THOREAU: Visionary of Nature or Dirty, White Hippie? Attended Harvard for $188 per year. 232 students Met Emerson as teacher of rhetoric at Harvard. Took eight terms of Greek and Latin, five terms of German, and two terms of Spanish.

2 Left the school afterward.
He said of Harvard: “It contains all the branches of education, but none of the roots.” Started as a teacher at the Concord elementary school, but lasted only 2 weeks before he was told to whip the children. He resigned instead.
