1 The different ways the Elements of Art can be used in a work of art.
Principles of Design The different ways the Elements of Art can be used in a work of art. The way artists combine the Elements of Art to create a successful work of art.

2 EMPHASIS= is an area that first attracts attention in a composition
EMPHASIS= is an area that first attracts attention in a composition. This area is more importation when compared to the other objects or elements in a composition. The motif around the edge of this plate points inward toward the deer and the bird flying down toward the deer help create emphasis on the deer. Contrast helps create emphasis on this plate. Emphasis is created on this Greek vase because the main character is the only one dressed in red and is on a horse. In addition, all the other figures are facing him.

3 BALANCE= is a feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color, etc.
Balance can be symmetrical (evenly balanced) or asymmetrical (unevenly balanced).

4 UNITY= brings together a composition with similar units.
If your composition was using wavy lines and organic shapes you would stay with those types of lines and shapes and not put just one geometric shape. Helen Beard These works are unified by use of color, shape, line, texture, and/or imagery.

5 CONTRAST= offers some change creating a visual discord in a composition.
Darrielle Straughan Contrast shows the difference between elements in a composition. It can also be used to create an area of emphasis.

6 PATTERN= repeating the elements in a recognizable way over the surface of an area.
Repeated elements are called motifs. Patterns add movement and variety to artworks. Patterns may establish a dominate area.

7 RHYTHM= is a movement in which some elements recur regularly
RHYTHM= is a movement in which some elements recur regularly. Like a dance it will have a flow of objects that will seem to be like the beat of music Rachid Koraichi Caroleen Sanders Julie Peck MOVEMENT= is a visual flow through the composition. It can be the suggestion of motion in a design as you move from object to object by way of placement and position.

8 PROPORTION= concerns the size relationships between parts of an artwork, the size relationship of parts to one another and to a whole. Nathan Halpern Sergio Bustamante Proportion in architecture = the roof of a house must not look too heavy, nor should the doors look too large. Lisa Larson Proportion can be used to show emphasis, distance in space and balance. Scale refers to the size or an object in relation to the size of other objects around it or its environment.

9 VARIETY= introducing differences in the elements of a composition
VARIETY= introducing differences in the elements of a composition. A means of avoiding monotony and increasing visual interest in an artwork. Mike Kern Irit Gabrieli
