Cosmetologists offer nail care and makeup services, typically have more female customers. Cosmetologists are normally the only ones who can use wax to remove hair. Both barbers and cosmetologists provide personal care services, such as cutting and styling hair. Both occupations are regulated by the individual state, so exact duties and licensing requirements vary. Each state decides what services barbers and cosmetologists may offer, and neither can offer all of the services the other can provide. However, although there are differences between the two occupations, there are also similarities.
