In 1 Tim 3 and Titus 1 there are some 20 qualifications listed for the eldership
These can be broken down into positive and negative qualifications

3. Not Given To Wine 1 Tim. 3:3 & Titus 1:7
“No more dangerous practice is known to man than the use of strong drink” D. Lipscomb
Brother Larimore called it “the waters of eternal destruction”
Prov. 20:1

4. No Striker 1 Tim. 3:3 and Titus 1:7
This would naturally follow the one who drinks
One always ready to fight – quarrelsome – a combative person

5. No Brawler (KJV) or Not Contentious (ASV)
1 Tim. 3:3
The first three negative qualifications are closely related
Means not contentious – not argumentative – not quarrelsome
Rom. 12:18

6. Not Covetous (KJV) 1 Tim.. 3:3
This means one who is not a lover of money
1 Tim. 6:10

7. Not Greedy Of Filthy Lucre
1 Tim. 3:3 & Titus 1:7
Covetous speaks of the love of money an this phrase refers to getting it any way you can
“one who gets money by base or dishonorable means”

8. Not A Novice 1 Tim. 3:6 “He must not be a recent convert,…” ESV
“A new convert should never be ordained and elder.” L. R. Wilson

9. Not Self Willed Titus 1:7 “ Self-pleasing, self willed, arrogant”
2 Pet. 2:10
