Introduction In 1 Tim 3 and Titus 1 there are some 20 qualifications listed for the eldership These can be broken down into positive and negative qualifications

Not Given To Wine 1 Tim. 3:3 & Titus 1:7
“No more dangerous practice is known to man than the use of strong drink” D. Lipscomb Brother Larimore called it “the waters of eternal destruction” Prov. 20:1

No Striker 1 Tim. 3:3 and Titus 1:7
This would naturally follow the one who drinks One always ready to fight – quarrelsome – a combative person

No Brawler (KJV) or Not Contentious (ASV)
1 Tim. 3:3 The first three negative qualifications are closely related Means not contentious – not argumentative – not quarrelsome Rom. 12:18

Not Covetous (KJV) 1 Tim.. 3:3
This means one who is not a lover of money 1 Tim. 6:10

Not Greedy Of Filthy Lucre
1 Tim. 3:3 & Titus 1:7 Covetous speaks of the love of money an this phrase refers to getting it any way you can “one who gets money by base or dishonorable means”
