1 Year 2 End of Key Stage Information
Thursday 19th April 2018

2 Overview During May 2018 all 7 and 11 year olds nationally take their ‘Standard Attainment Tests’ often call SATs. These tests are designed to check that all children are making progress in school whatever their ability. The test scores will help us reach our final judgement on your child. We will also take into account their class work too.

3 Overview Testing must take place in May.
Year 2 have the whole month to do the tests. All 6 and 7 year olds are tested on: Reading and comprehension Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Maths- arithmetic and reasoning. Class teachers must mark the tests. Tests locked away until the day we use them. Strict checks in place!

4 Reading The new reading test for Year 2 pupils will involve 2 separate papers. Paper 1 consists of a selection of passages totalling words, with questions throughout. Paper 2 consists of a reading booklet or magazine of a selection of passages totalling words. Children will write their answers in a separate A4 size answer booklet. Each paper is 50% of the total marks and should take about 30 mins each to do. They are not strictly timed because we are not testing speed of reading. There is expected to be a range of fiction, poetry and non fiction and the questions will get a little more difficult towards the end of the tests.

5 Reading-types of questions
Multiple choice: Choose/tick out of choice given Ranking /ordering e.g. Number the events below to show the order they happened in the story. Matching: Match the character with the job they do in the story. Labelling: Label the text to show the title. Find and copy: Find and copy one word that tells you what the weather was like. Short Answer: What did the bear eat? Open-ended answer: Why did Lucy write a letter? Give two reasons

8 SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar)
Children taking KS1 SATs will now sit: Paper 1: Spelling (20 words) 20 marks The word is: Sentence given for context then repeat word. Clear handwriting is vital. (a/u/n/h/l/t) Paper 2:is not compulsory this year.

9 Maths The new KS1 Maths tests consists of 2 papers:
Paper 1 Arithmetic – 25 questions of x – x ÷ and fractions. Paper 2 Maths reasoning on various topics e.g. shape, measures, money, time, graphs, charts where they have to show, draw, match, explain.

12 Summary The tests will be well spread out in May.
The children will be well prepared for the reading they have to do. We can read questions to them if they ask for help but no clues or prompting is permitted. A test day will mean children have to shield all their work from other eyes!

13 Summary Ensure the children are not unwell, rested and ready for their day as tests will be in the mornings. Any illness then we’ll run the tests on return to school as long as it’s by the 25th May (before half term).

14 Reporting to parents You will receive a teacher assessment statement for each of the areas mentioned above. This will be sent home with your child’s school report (on a separate sheet).
