4 David’s Exit from Jerusalem
Ziba - Servant of Mephibosheth 16:3 - “Today the house of Israel will restore the kingdom of my father to me” Shimei - Relative of Saul 16:7-8 - “Get out, get out, …you worthless fellow! The Lord has returned upon you all the bloodshed of the house of Saul…you are taken in your own evil…” Shimei comes up at Bahurim

5 Abishai’s reaction Shimei was throwing stones and insults at David and his men. 16:9 - Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head. David: What if the Lord has told him to do this? Vs 11 – My son who came from me seeks my life! So in the bigger picture why would I be so upset as to kill this Benjamite??? Leave him alone and let him curse…

6 Absalom enters Jerusalem
“Ahithophel with him” Hushai greets Absalom Absalom is surprised Ahithophel gives advice to “Go in to your father’s concubines…” vs 22 - So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof

7 Ahithophel His advise was “as if one inquired of the word of God”
Remember David’s reaction in 15:31 He now gives additional advice to take men and pursue David tonight! Absalom likes that advice but also wants Hushai’s counsel

8 David’s Spy Hushai goes to Zadok and Abiathar
Jonathan and Ahimaaz were the runners and they were staying at En-rogel to not be seen leaving the city David notified and they cross the Jordan

10 Psalm 3 “A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son”
Enemies have risen up, but you are my shield I lay down and wake up because you sustain me Plea to be saved by the Lord “Salvation belongs to the Lord; Your blessing be upon Your people” Other Psalms that may fit in this timeframe based on content clues 4,5,11, 12,23,25,26,27,28,41,55,58,61,62,63,86, 122,140,141,143 Items that may indicate this timeframe: David is in trouble He feels betrayed by those close to him, especially his former friend (may think this would refer to Ahithophel). When there is an indication of David being King, or Jerusalem being capital, or the ark being in Jerusalem then the time of affliction would refer to Absalom’s rebellion, rather than Saul’s persecution as David wasn’t King, Saul didn’t rule in Jerusalem and the ark was not in Jerusalem until this timeframe.

11 Lessons The words of others. How do we react?
