5 The Civil war As the U.S began to grow in a divide happened between the Industrial north and agricultural south, which depended on slave labor After years of debate over state’s rights and the abolition of slavery, the South soon seceded from the U.S sparking a bitter civil War - Led 620,000 deaths

Investors in England began investing money into businesses in the U.S and cotton plantations to the south. Effects: Growth of urban cities: New York, Detroit Creation of new global companies: Goodyear, Ford, Carnegie Steel Creation of new railway networks to link western states By 1914 the U.S economically competitive with European powers

7 Settling the West 1860’s- 1900 As the U.S began to industrialize, politicians looked to settle the newly acquired western territories Many business owners saw the “unsettled” territories as a “breadbasket” for resources such as : lumber, gold, cattle, and other natural resources BIG PROBLEM: NATIVE AMERICANS WERE ALREADY LIVING THERE
