12. The Dust Bowl- Great Plains
Causes:
Farmers plows uprooted natural grasses that held soils moisture
Crop prices drop- famers are not farming all of their land
Drought occurs
No crops or grass to hold the moisture from the rainfall- soil turns to dust
Winds caused enormous dust storms

13. Dust Bowl Effects: Blackened skies (hundreds of miles)
When dust settled- buried crops and livestock
Humans/cattle die of suffocation from dust
Okies- Oklahoma natives who headed West (California) to escape the Dust Bowl
Effected mostly southwest region

Rugged individualism- Government should not step in to help individuals out
Hoover’s attempts
Increase government spending on public works – hoped to replace jobs lost in the private sector
President Hoover wanted state and city governments rather than the federal government to provide relief -or money given directly to impoverished families.

17. Hunger Marches and Protests
In Oklahoma 500 residents looted grocery stores
Protests around the country “Feed the poor, tax the rich”
Farmers facing foreclosure (bank taking over farm) destroyed their own crops to try and raise prices
Burned corn to heat houses
Stopped dairy truckers and dumped their milk

18. Bonus Marchers
Congress was to pay a $1,000 bonus to war veterans in 1945
Putnam Bill requested that money early
War veterans supporting the bill marched to Washington – Bonus Army
The bill was denied
Veterans were removed with force led by General MacArthur
