1 Coulomb law

2 Electric Fields of Force
The Force of Electric charges are determined by the type of charge of the objects. unlike charges attract like charges repel A strong charge will attract a weak or neutral charge

3 Coulomb’s law The magnitude of the force between 2 equal sized objects Fe = k q1 q2 r2 k (electrostatic constant =8.99 x 109 N m2/C2) q (charge in Coulombs) r ( distance between the charges) Fe r

4  Qualitative statement: The force between two charged particles depends on three things:
1) the nature of the signs of the charges: tells you whether the force is attractive or repulsive 2) the magnitudes of the charges: The bigger the magnitudes (strictly speaking, the product of the two magnitudes), the stronger the force. 3) The distance between the centers of the two particles: The larger the distance, the weaker the force.

5 Coulombs Law: Summary Fe = k q1 q2 r2
The force of electrical charge is an inverse square of the distance between the charge:

7 Periodic Trends Compare the force of attraction between a valence electron to the core of fluorine vs oxygen Compare the force of attraction between a valence electron to the core of fluorine vs bromine

8 How does this relate to atomic radius, ionization energy, electron affinity, electronegativity, and reactivity?
