2
Plan for the week Minority influence Social change (essay feedback)
Mini mock/Christmas quiz Homework E: pre-reading and activities for biological approach and attachment.
3
So far… Think of three questions on social influence that you can ask someone else. Write down on a w/b Pair up with someone who is not from your table. Take it in turn to asks your questions to your partner. Task 1: complete task 1 on your sheet recapping last weeks session
4
Minority influence when an individual or a small group, change the behaviour and/or attitudes of the larger group. It is the opposite of conformity Task: In your groups come up with three examples (either current or from history) of people or small groups that you believe have been influential with the majority.
5
Things to consider are:
Now that you have chosen your influential person, you have to prepare a case for the class detailing exactly how and why they are (or were) influential with the majority. Things to consider are: What was the nature of their influence? In other words how did they change the majority? Did this person’s influence happen gradually? If so, think about how long it took for them to achieve a majority following and how that process occurred (the stages of the process) Were there situational factors that made this person more likely to be influential? (e.g. recent event/s, or the general ethos of the time) What were the motives of this person? How might their motives explain their influence? Was there anything about the personality of this person that made them influential? Was there anything about the behaviour of this person that made them influential? Was there anything about the personal characteristics of this person (e.g. Age, class) that made them influential?

Drawing Attention Now try to apply this to the suffragettes by filling out the table on your handout Consistency Deeper Processing Augmentation principle Snowball Effect Social Cryptomnesia
15
Role of minority influence in social change
1. Drawing attention (providing social proof of the problem) 2. Consistency (…of message and intent) 3. Deeper processing (think instead of accepting status quo) 4. Augmentation principle (no. of incidents to demonstrate point) 5. The snowball effect (change from minority to majority) 6. Social cryptomnesia (individuals have memory that change has occurred but don’t remember how it happened) Describe how the six-step process of minority influence can explain the social change above
16
Social cryptomnesia Acceptance of values promoted by the minority accompanied by an apparent forgetting of the crucial role played by the minority group. Changes accepted but group may not be given credit for producing the changes Minority group may still be viewed negatively or discriminated against.

Apply It… Everyone agrees that Britain in is an obesity crisis – 65% en and 58% women are now overweight or obese. Heart disease certain cancers and especially type 2 diabetes are all on the increase, costing the NHS billions of pounds every year Experts agree that any improvement in the situation is going to require significant changes in attitudes and behaviours across the whole of society.
