8. Uses Of Alpha Radiation.
One of the most common uses is in fire alarms. An alpha source is used to charge the air, if the charge changes it is detected and an alarm goes off.

9. Radiation source
Thickness Control – Job description
The radiation will be passed through thin paper and monitored by the detector. This can then tell the hydraulic control if it needs to squeeze the paper more or less to keep to the correct thickness.
Sterilisation – Job description
The radiation will be used to kill microbes on surgical instruments and food.
Checking Welding – Job description
Radiation will be used test the quality of pipe welds. Source of radiation is placed inside the pipe and photographic paper wrapped around the weld. If there is any gap in the pipe, radiation gets through and shows up on the paper.
Tracer – Job description
The radiation will be used to detect leaks in oil pipes. Source of radiation is added to the oil and a detector is moved across the surface above. A leak is located to where an abnormally high amount of radiation is detected. .
