* Double Block options require giving up an elective

3. This option allows the student more time to master the material.
What is Double block?
When a student is enrolled in a Double Block math class, they will have 90 minutes of math every day with the same teacher.
This option allows the student more time to master the material.
Please note that taking a double block math class takes up two slots in the student’s schedule so this requires the student to give up an elective their freshman year.

4. What is skinny block?
When a student is enrolled in a Skinny Block class the student will have 45 minutes of math every day. This will be paired with 45 minutes of English every day as well.
These two classes are offered during the same block, so the rest of the student’s schedule is not impacted.
The benefit to this is that the student is seeing Algebra 1 and English every day, thus helping with retention of the material.

5. If your student is in math 8:
Math 8 students have two options:
Skinny Block Algebra 1/English 9A
Double Block Applications / Algebra 1
Both of these classes will take the Algebra 1 SOL in May

6. If your student is in Algebra 1 (repeating):
Algebra 1 students have two options after expunging 8th grade Algebra 1:
Algebra 1 / Geometry Double Block
These students will take the Algebra 1 SOL in January
and the Geometry SOL in May.
Success in this program will have them ready for Algebra 2 in 10th grade.
Regular Algebra 1
These students will take the Algebra 1 SOL in May. Success in this program will have them ready for Geometry in 10th grade.

7. If your student in Algebra 1:
If your student is working successfully this year in Algebra 1 and ready to move on, he/she will take regular Geometry in 9th grade

8. What do I sign my student up for?
Double Block Applications / Algebra 1:
Sign up for Applications of Algebra (an elective credit, but not a math credit) AND
Algebra 1.
Note that an elective must be dropped to make this work in the schedule.
Skinny Block Algebra 1/ English 9A: Sign up for Algebra 1 and English 9A as usual.
We will hand schedule these students so that their English and Math pair up to create the skinny block classes.
Double Block Algebra 1 / Geometry: Sign up for Algebra 1 AND Geometry.
Regular Algebra 1: Sign up for Algebra 1 only.
