Main activities 904 units have been surveyed during August 2007 Survey through personal visits to the farmer Aggregation of data and recalculations have been done, resulting in final estimates Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

8 Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta
Number of AS used Totally 61active substance is included in the different preparations – of which: 29 AS of Fungicides 20 AS of Herbicides 8 AS of Insecticides 4 AS of Growth Regulators Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

AS quantity (in kg) Share in insecticides, % Dimethoate 94.1 Alpha-cypermethrin 95.17 3.2 Lambda-cyhalothrin 36.81 1.2 Top-3 active substances comprise 98.5% of total quantity of AS The mainly used 3 AS in % of total quantity are also the most common AS in % of area treated within insecticide group Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

12 Top–3 active substances – growth regulators
AS quantity (in kg) Share in GR, % Chlormequat 76677 90.3 Ethephon 5338 6.3 Top-2 active substances comprise 96.6% of total quantity of AS The mainly used 2 AS in % of total quantity are also the most common AS in % of area treated within insecticide group (87.3%) Only 4 AS of growth regulators are used, but, as the content of actives in these products is high GR comprise 37% of total quantity AS applied Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

13 Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta
Average number of applications and average proportion of full label rate Major groups Average number of applications Average proportion of full label rate Fungicides 1.3 0.68 Herbicides 1.2 0.74 Insecticides 0.65 Plant Growth Regulators 0.70 Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

14 Average quantity of AS per cultivated area by districts, kg/ha
Talsu district Madonas Balvu Valkas Ludzas Tukuma Saldus Ventspils Daugavpils Ogres Valmieras Aizkraukles Bauskas Gulbenes Dobeles Liepājas Kuldīgas Limbažu Rīgas Cēsu Jēkabpils Preiļu Krāslavas Alūksnes Rēzeknes Jelgavas Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

15 Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta
Main findings Methodology for the implementation of the proposed Regulation on plant protection products has been worked out Dataset on PPP usage covering the whole national production has been obtained Calculation routines have been set up Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

16 Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta
Problems encountered Quality of filled questionnaires was not equally good The most appropriate time for interwieves has not been chosen The most difficult stage during the data processing was the cooperation with programmer because very specific area of the work had to be done by programmer In a small country only few experts are involved in the project and in the case if some of them leaves the team problem is the replacement Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

17 Lessons learned for the future
Interviewers must be better trained in fill in the questionnaire accordingly to the guidelines. Representatives from CSB must be involved in the training process Carefully should be checked commercial names of products and active substances taken into account a simple differences in prefixes and suffixes As the survey for the implementation of new regulation requirements is foreseen to be carried out once a year for all crops it should be a computer assisted survey (using lap-tops in interviews Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta

18 Lessons learned for the future (continued)
The best solution would be to set up the local legislation act with the obligations for Plant Protection Service to keep up electronic data base, and PPP users once a year must be obliged to send the data on used plant protection products Workshop on Pesticide Indicators 2008, Malta
