“Golden Isle” Trivia Cumberland Island is known for its wild horses. Ancient Indians named Tybee Island “Salt”. Ossabaw was named by the Creek and Muscogean Indians for the leaves of a yaupon holly that would induce vomiting. Spanish Explorers were the first to claim Jekyll Island in 1510 and called it “Whale Island”. created by 5
