Major Academic Plan (MAP)
Associate in Arts BAE Mathematics/Elementary Department of Mathematics College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSTEM) Why become an elementary teacher with a major emphasis in mathematics? A major in mathematics will increase your understanding of elementary mathematics, of how elementary students make sense of mathematics, of the mathematics standards required in elementary school, and of ways to support students’ learning of mathematics. It will increase your perspective on how mathematics grows beyond the K-8 level and on the role of mathematics in the world today. Teaching mathematics to elementary students allows you to make a difference in the lives of young people by empowering them to understand the world mathematically, use quantitative reasoning to make decisions in their lives, and expand their opportunities to choose interesting careers. Student Learning Outcomes Students will: 1. Demonstrate and apply in the classroom a profound understanding of fundamental mathematics within the K–8 curriculum, of how these topics progress within the K–8 range, of how these topics extend and relate to the mathematics in the secondary curriculum, and of the fundamental concepts in the curriculum in the secondary curriculum. 2. Demonstrate and apply in the classroom a deep understanding of how students learn mathematics and of the pedagogical knowledge specific to mathematics teaching and learning. 3. Demonstrate a productive disposition as a student and teacher of mathematics.
