PRC04 Conclusion and what has happened since then Linear Collider R&D: TPC The PRC acknowledges the impressive work of the TPC group as an international effort and encourages a further globalization of the LC-TPC effort. Globalization ~complete: other US groups, Asian groups(+China), other European groups, extensive R&D work continuing. The PRC recognizes the importance to finish the studies done in the first phase of the R&D (called demonstration phase in the report) and the progress towards this goal during the last years. It agrees that a next step should be the design and construction of a second generation (larger) series of prototypes. Organization of Large Eudet facility started The PRC supports the group in its continuing need for test facilities, e.g. the high field magnet at DESY and elsewhere and adequate test beams of electrons and hadrons, which will be required in particular starting around 2006. Will be provided by the Eudet facility The PRC recommends that DESY continues to strongly support the group in order to allow an involvement in the project at a significant level. 21/11/2018 Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY Desy PRC May 2006

PRC06 11May: Peter Wienemann presentation could only cover some examples. More examples are in: The written report—>version (with all plots) at e.g., Kek beam tests MWPC GEM Micromegas Resistive foil Other small chambers (e.g.Cornell/Purdue) Complete overview of design issues (Appendix), to be addressed by LP 21/11/2018 Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY Desy PRC May 2006

4 R&D Planning: reminder
1) Demonstration phase Continue work with small prototypes on mapping out parameter space, understanding resolution, etc, to prove feasibility of an MPGD TPC. For CMOS/Si-based ideas this will include a basic proof-of-principle. 2) Consolidation phase Build and operate the LP, large prototype, (Ø ≥ 75cm, drift ≥ 100cm), with EUDET infrastructure as pedestal, to test manufacturing techniques for MPGD endplates, fieldcage and electronics. Design is starting---building and testing will take another ~ 3 years. 3) Design phase After phase 2, the decision as to which endplate technology to use for the LC TPC would be taken and final design started. 21/11/2018 Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY Desy PRC May 2006

LCTPC Finances: delivered to WWS R&D panel Dec.2005 ILC Detector R&D Project Topic priorities and estimated support needed Project name: LC-TPC R&D Funding countries (regions): Canada/USA (America), China/Japan (Asia), EU/France/Germany/Netherlands/Poland/Russia /Sweden/CERN(Europe). Priority 1 topics Topic-description overview (~ 1 line description per topic) => The TPC groups have divided the R&D work into three Phases: [1] Demonstration Phase: finish the work on small TPC prototypes. [2] Consolidation Phase: design, build and test a Large Prototype (LP). [3] Design Phase for the LC-TPC. (Priority 2) Topic descriptions for Phase [1], the Small Chamber Program : Topic descriptions for Phase [2], LP hardware: Topic descriptions for Phase [2], software/simulation issues for the LP and the LC-TPC. Topic descriptions for Phase [2], calibration/reliability issues for the LP and LC-TPC. Urgent financial requirements for Priority 1 topics: 21/11/2018 Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY Desy PRC May 2006 ‘equipment’ includes all non-staff costs - consumables, travel, overhead. ‘FTEs’ includes academics, students and support which are combined for this overview. Comments: The TPC groups within the Eudet consortium have approved funding as indicated above; this will cover ~50% of the costs for the LP and LC-TPC programs. The extra-Eudet TPC groups are of about equal strength (manpower and resources) to those in Eudet, as estimated from the report to the Desy PRC in October The extra-Eudet TPC groups will thus be requested to generate a matching amount to that already approved for Eudet, as indicated under ‘additional support needed’. The extra-Eudet TPC groups will be applying individually for support to carry out their parts of the programs. The funding profile will not be exactly flat, but until it is known better for the extra-Eudet groups, the above can serve as a working hypothesis.

13 LCTPC ‘collaboration’
We had in the past: -Steering group with 1 representative and 1 backup per country to discuss overall situation, make recommendations: Country steering member/backup CAN Madhu Dixit/Dean Karlen D Stefan Roth/Ties Behnke F Paul Colas/Vincent Lepeltier NL Jan Timmermans PL Elzbieta Rulikowska RUS Alexei Buzulutskov USA Mike Ronan/Ulrich Becker Convener Ron Settles -Regular R&D phone/video meetings set up by me -Madhu Dixit did minutes of steering meetings -Paul Colas kept track of TPC talks at conferences/workshops -Some other responsibilites were distributed What do we need for the enlarged TPC collaboration and Phase (2)? 21/11/2018 Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY Desy PRC May 2006

LCTPC ‘collaboration’ What do we need for the enlarged collaboration and Phase (2)? Suggestions being discussed (no decision yet)… -Extend steering to new countries -Form some kind of collaboration board consisting of group leaders -The collaboration board decides how to organize itself and -Elects a spokesperson by the end of 2006. -Write up a (loose) MOU for the LP work. 21/11/2018 Ron Settles MPI-Munich/DESY Desy PRC May 2006
