1 Chapter 12: Solids & Modern materials
Dr. Aimée Tomlinson Chem 1212

2 Classification, Crystalline, and Amorphous Solids
Sections Classification, Crystalline, and Amorphous Solids

3 Two Main Types of Solids
Crystalline Solids Have a cubic array of tightly packed atoms or molecules Ionic Solids Composed of cations/anions Atomic Solids Composed of a single atom Molecular Solids Composed of molecules Copyright Oliver Kreylos, Center for Image Processing and Integrated Computing (CIPIC), University of California, Davis. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hex_ice.GIF Amorphous: Are complete disordered and have no repeat unit

4 Metallic Solids lattice: refers to the 3D array of particles in a crystalline solid lattice points: are the points of array that are occupied by a particle unit cell: basic repeating unit of the particle arrangement in a crystalline solid Three types of solid arrangements: X 3 Simple Cubic Body-Centered Cubic Face-Centered Cubic * 8 corners + 6 faces * 1/2 for face * 8(1/8) + 6(1/2) = 4 * 8 corners + 1 body * 1 for body * 8(1/8) + 1= 2 * 8 corners * 1/8 for ea. * 8(1/8) = 1 One atom present in cube Two atoms present in cube Four atoms present in cube
