October 17th Understanding Populations
Working together with the person next to you, in your notebook, please define and provide an example how each would affect a population pgs 385 &383 The following is needed to assess a populations growth rate: Birthrate Death rate Immigration emigration
2
Birthrate – the number of births occurring in a period of time (increases a population)
Death rate – the number of deaths occurring in a period of time (decreases a population) Immigration- the movement of individuals into a population (increases population) Emigration – the movement of individuals out of a population (decreases a population)
3
Copy the following in your notebook and answer:
A population’s emigration in one month totaled 15 individuals. During the same period, immigration was 11. During this same period 20 individuals were born and 10 died. What was the effect on the population?
4
Emigration = -15 Immigration = +11 Births = +20 Deaths = -10 = +6

Density-Independent Factors Density-Dependent Factors
I can differentiate between density-dependent and density independent regulation of populations Working together with the person next to you, in your notebook, please define and provide an example of each of the following terms (pg.388)… Limiting Factor Density-Independent Factors Density-Dependent Factors
6
Limiting Factor – Any factor, such as space, that restrains the growth of a population
Density-Independent Factors – weather, floods and fires that reduce the population by the same proportion, regardless of the populations size Density-Dependent Factors – resource limitations, such as shortages of food or nesting sites, that are triggered by increasing population density
7
Carrying Capacity How do limiting factors affect carrying capacity?
List the density dependent factors in this video
8
I can describe the negative impact of human activities on the environment
Working together with the person next to you, in your notebook, please list the impacts that human have had on the environment, define and provide an examples
9
Deforestation Deforestation - is the destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses. Results in:? How does it affect our environment
10
Results in:??? How does it affect our environment
List in your notebook the effects of deforestation
11
Results in: Overall increase in Carbon dioxide levels – an increase in greenhouse gases (photosynthesis) Habitat loss for many species Forests are replaced by practices that increase green house gases Why do we do it?
12
Mining for gold and Factory Farming $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
13
What is Factory Farming?
14
Factory Farming: Results in:
Increases the Carbon Dioxide levels Increases the Methane levels Which increases the Green house gases = increase in average global temperatures * Alters ecosystems

16
I can describe the negative impact of human activities on the environment
Global Warming? Define global warming in your notebook. Describe what the greenhouse effect is What are greenhouse gases? Do we need the green house effect to survive on earth???
17
Global Warming: National geographic global warming 101
18
Global Warming: a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect. Results in: Loss of habitat, extinction, ecosystem imbalance
19
Polar ice melting Loss of habitat – extinction, imbalance of ecosystems
20
What contributes to global warming? Why?
21
These practice increases the amount of green house gases and water vapor in the atmosphere. So what does that mean?
22
The Green House Effect: We need it! Heats the earth!
23
Increasing greenhouse gases trap the sun’s energy -> global warming
24
As the carbon dioxide levels increase what is happening to our temperatures????
