Educational philosophies grow out of the more general philosophies of life. Aristotle, Socrates, and the like developed philosophies of education.
There are several educational philosophies that are studied within Teacher Education, two of which have had and still have the most impact of American Education: essentialism and progressivism.
Essentialism is a traditional philosophy where learning is based upon what the teacher does. Progressivism is a contemporary philosophy based upon what the student does.
