4 Convergent Boundaries: Where two plates meet while moving toward each other.

5 The Ring of Fire is an area of intense volcanic activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean. It is caused primarily by convergence of plates.

6 How the plates converge and what landforms are created depends on what type of crust is involved. There are three basic types. As we talk about these different types of boundaries, pay attention to what kind of things happen at each of the boundaries.

7 Oceanic vs. Oceanic Convergence: Two oceanic plates collide.

8 Oceanic vs. Continental Convergence: Ocean crust collides with continental crust.

9 Continental vs. Continental Convergence: Continental crust collides with continental crust.

10 What happens at each of the boundaries?
Oceanic vs. Oceanic Oceanic vs. Continental Continental vs. Continental The most dense crust is subducted. As the plate is subducted, crust is melted, pushed back up to form volcanic island arcs. The deepest trenches are formed here. Frequent moderate to strong earthquakes (all depths). Example: The Mariana Trench and Island Arc Oceanic crust subducts. Trenches As stress builds up, you get Earthquakes of all depths. Part of plate crumpled, forms mountains. The subduction causes the oceanic plate to melt and be pushed back up through the crust to form volcanic mountain ranges. Example: Nazca colliding with South American forming Andes Mountains Continental Crust resists subduction. The two plates buckle and are pushed upward, forming massive mountain ranges. Large shallow earthquakes can be frequent here. Example: The Himilayan Mountains formed as the Indian Plate collides with the Eurasian Plate.
