Standard 7c Communicate the logical connection
among hypotheses, science concepts, tests conducted, data collected, and conclusions drawn from scientific evidence

The Scientific Method The Scientific Method
3
I. The Scientific Method
A. The Scientific Method is steps that scientists use to answer questions and solve problems.
4
II. The Scientific Method involves 7 steps:
Observation – the beginning Question – AKA… Background Reading Hypothesis Design an experiment Decide on & Interpret data Draw Conclusions & Analyze Communicate Results
5
A. Observation 1. You observe something in the material world,
using your 5 senses. AH—Look at this!
6
B. Question 1. You ask a question about what you observe.
7
C. Hypothesis 1. You predict what you think the answer to
your question might be based on the research you will conduct. (Background reading.
8
D. Design an experiment 1. You figure out a way to test whether
hypothesis is correct. 2. The outcome must be measurable. 3. Must have a control group an experimental group.
9
E. Interpret results 1. You do the experiment and record the results.
2. You repeat the experiment to confirm your results.
10
F. State Conclusion G. Communicate results
1. You state whether your hypothesis was accepted or rejected. 1. Report results to others G. Communicate results

Example Controlled Experiment
Observation: Brownies made with applesauce taste just as good as those with oil. Create the scientific problem for the controlled study. For example: Will brownies made with the same volume of applesauce as those made with oil taste better? Then, decide upon your hypothesis. Plan for the data the type of data you will gather.
