Data Handling Data Handling Year 3 Introduction:
The aim of this module is to introduce the key elements of a spreadsheet and for children to gather and input data into a spreadsheet of their own creation. It also introduces online survey software as a means of collecting data. Expected Outcomes: Explain that different types of information/data can be gathered and stored in fields in a datasheet Create a spreadsheet Generate and input data into a spreadsheet and analyse the data to answer questions Use technology to collect information through surveys Present data in graph format. Before we start: Read through the module. Understand how long you will need to deliver the module – each step roughly equates to a 1 hour lesson, however this may differ according to the ability of your pupils. Identify the resources you need (see list below) and ensure you will have access to them for the duration of the module. Familiarise yourself with the software or hardware you will be using to deliver the module.

Step 1: Explain that information/data can be gathered and stored
Explain to the children that they are going to look at the gathering and storing of information/data. Ask the children where have they seen data records (secretary’s office - pupil records, top trump cards etc.). Show children the activity on Hwb resources, it is important to use Starter Activity only for this year group: Each child to complete an information card about themselves (see Information Cards in resources). Teacher to enter class data into an Excel spreadsheet using the following fields: Name, Birthday Month, Height, Favourite Food, Favourite Drink, Brothers, Sisters (open example in resources).
