How to use the case studies
The purpose of the case studies is to explore and practise how to make judgements and complete documents to assess potential. This will help to prepare for talent review meetings and how this information may feed into succession decisions. Two case studies are available; one which is based on a fictional person within the NHS, Alex O’Brien, and a fictional person within the private sector, Ali Smyth. The purpose of including an example from the private sector is to be able to review and compare different approaches. Either or both of the case studies could be completed by: An individual to enhance their skills and knowledge in talent management Used as part of a learning programme As a template to prepare for a talent review Firstly, read through the profile for Alex O’Brien and / or Ali Smyth. Use the information provided to: Assess and calculate the potential rating Capture evidence of positive behaviours and areas of concern Record the overall leadership potential and performance rating or evaluation Record that person’s position on the 9-box grid or in the talent pool Decide whether that person should feature on a succession plan and the key points and recommendations that you would take into a talent review meeting with your line manager or peer group. List the advantages and disadvantages of the methods used in the NHS case study and the private sector case study. A model answer is provided for each for reference.
