Point to the Word 1 image. 1. One word in the selection is technique. Say it with me: technique. A technique is a method or way of doing something. The painter used a special technique to create her lifelike paintings. 2. En español, technique quiere decir “un método o forma de hacer algo, una técnica.” El artista usaba una técnica especial para crear sus cuadros realistas. 3. Technique in English and técnica in Spanish are cognates. They sound almost the same and mean the same thing in both languages. 4. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word technique. (Point to the photographer.) This photographer has a technique for photographing leaves. His method allows him to show what leaves look like close up. PARTNER TALK 5. What is something you do very well? Tell a partner about your technique for doing this thing. 6. Choose an athlete, musician, or artist you admire. Tell your partner what techniques this person uses to make him or her especially good at what he or she does. 7. Point to the Word 2 image. 1. Another word in the selection is foolishness. Say it with me: foolishness. Foolishness is an action or behavior that is silly or doesn’t show good judgment. Eating only candy shows foolishness, but eating healthful foods shows common sense and good judgment. 2. En español, foolishness quiere decir “acción o comportamiento que no demuestra juicio, tontería.” Comer sólo dulces es una tontería, pero comer alimentos saludables demuestra que tienes juicio. 3. Point to the Word 3 image. 1. One word in the selection is inspire. Say it with me: inspire. To inspire means “to bring something about or to move to action.” Seeing you read a book might inspire your little brother or sister to pick up a book. 2. En español, to inspire quiere decir “causar que algo ocurra o que alguien actúe de cierta manera, inspirar.” Verte leer un libro puede inspirar a tu hermanito o hermanita a hacer lo mismo. 3. To inspire in English and inspirar in Spanish are cognates. They sound almost the same and mean the same thing in both languages. 4. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word inspire. (Point to the snowflakes.) Snowflake Bentley’s snowflake photographs inspired, or influenced and motivated, others to take pictures of snowflakes. PARTNER TALK 5. Tell a partner about some people who inspire you. What do these people make you want to do? 6. With your partner, make a list of things that inspire you to try your best in school. Share your list with the class. (Examples include: wanting to make parents proud; wanting to go to college; wanting to get a good job) 7. Point to the Word 4 image. 1. Another word in the selection is evaporate. Say it with me: evaporate. To evaporate means “to change from a solid or liquid into a gas.” The hot sun will make the dew on the grass evaporate. 2. En español, to evaporate quiere decir “cambiar de un estado sólido o líquido a gas, evaporar.” El sol caliente hará que el rocío sobre el pasto se evapore. 3. To evaporate in English and evaporar in Spanish are cognates. They sound almost the same and mean the same thing in both languages. 4. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word evaporate. (Point to the boat.) This boat was once floating in water, but over a long period of time the water evaporated, or turned to gas. The boat is now sitting on dry land. MOVEMENT 5. Imagine you are measuring the water level in a lake. Hold your hand level with your desk. Now show me with your hand where the water level in the lake would be if water evaporated. Would it be higher or lower than your desk? (lower) 6. Draw a picture of wet grass early in the morning. Now draw a picture of it later on a sunny day. What caused the grass to dry out? (the sun) 7. Now let’s say evaporate together three more times: evaporate, evaporate, evaporate. evaporate

Point to the Word 5 image. 1. One word in the selection is magnify. Say it with me: magnify. To magnify means “to make something appear larger.” A microscope will magnify a very small thing and make it appear larger. 2. En español, to magnify quiere decir “hacer que algo se vea más grande de lo que es, aumentar, ampliar.” Un microscopio te permite ver una imagen ampliada de algo muy pequeño. 3. Now let’s look at a picture that demonstrates the word magnify. (Point to the magnifying glass.) This person is using a lens to magnify the pattern. Notice that the pattern looks larger through the lens. PARTNER TALK 4. With your partner, make a list of some tiny things that you might need to magnify in order to see them more clearly. (Examples include: small print; cells; parts of an insect) 5. Now choose one of the objects on your list. Work with your partner to draw a picture of what the object would look like if you could magnify it. Share your drawing with the class. Tell us what you magnified. 6. Annual means “related to or determined by the year.” The annual snowfall for an area is the average amount of snow the area receives in a year. 2. 1. In English, no better than is another way to say “equal to” or “the same as.” It is usually said to describe two things that are equally poor rather than equally good. Say it with me: no better than. If you cheat on a test, you are no better than a thief because you are stealing someone else’s work. 2. En español, no better than quiere decir “igual a.” Esta expresión se usa para describir dos cosas que son de calidad inferior. Si copias a un compañero en un examen, eres igual a un ladrón porque le estás robando el trabajo a otra persona. 3. These sandcastles are no better than buckets of sand. 1. In English, the phrase kept a record means “wrote down and saved.” Say it with me: kept a record. Last year, I kept a record of all my students’ grades. I wrote down the grades and saved them all year. This year, I keep a record of your grades. 2. En español, kept a record quiere decir “escribir algo y conservarlo; llevar el registro de algo.” El año pasado llevé el registro de las calificaciones de todos mis estudiantes. 1. In English, we use the phrase gave away when we talk about something we gave to someone because we wanted that person to have it. Say it with me: gave away. I gave some books away to the library. The books were mine because I owned them. Now the library owns the books. 2. En español, gave away quiere decir “darle algo a alguien porque queremos que esa persona lo tenga; regalar, donar.” Doné unos libros a la biblioteca. Los libros eran míos porque me pertenecían. Ahora los libros le pertenecen a la biblioteca. 3. Now let’s look at a picture that shows the meaning of gave away. These students gave away some clothes. They once wore the clothes, but they don’t wear them anymore. That’s why they gave the clothes away. They thought other people might need them. PARTNER TALK 4. The students in the photo gave clothes away that they didn’t wear. They wanted other people to have them. People give away other things they own that they want someone to have. There are many things that people can give away. Work with your partner to name things that people sometimes give away. (Examples might be toys, magazines, tools.) Then tell your partner why you think people gave those things away. 5. People give things away because they don’t use them anymore. Sometimes they give things away because they want to share. I made bread and gave some away to my neighbor. Think about something that you gave away. What did you give away? Why did you give it away? 1. To gather in a book is to collect a group of things and display them in a book so that people can look at them. Say it with me: gather in a book. Photographs are often gathered in a book. 2. En español, to gather in a book quiere decir “reunir objetos en un libro para que otros puedan apreciarlos.” Las fotografías están reunidas en un libro. 3. The grandfather in this picture has gathered stamps in a book. He is showing his stamp collection to his grandson. Since he gathered his collection in a book, it is easy to share his collection with his grandson because the stamps are gathered in one place. PARTNER TALK 4. A scrapbook is one way people gather things in books. A scrapbook may include photographs, postcards, stickers, and quotes from family, friends, or famous people. What things would you gather in a book to make a scrapbook of your favorite memories? Tell a partner. 5. With your partner, make a list of as many things as you can think of that can be gathered in a book. Share your list with the class. (Examples include: stamps, stickers, photographs, quotations, baseball cards, paintings, drawings, coins) 6.
