FOCUS: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning (Mike Schmoker)
27
The key to success is not innovation; it is “simplicity and diligence” applied with fierce devotion to our highest priorities. Jim Collins
28
3 Elements to Approach with Simplicity and Diligence
What We Teach How We Teach Authentic Literacy
29
What We Teach Coherent curriculum w/topics and standards collectively selected by a team of teachers from the school/district- that is actually taught The number of power standards must not be excessive This allows us to teach the essential standards in sufficient intellectual depth, w/adequate time for reading, writing, and talking
30
How We Teach Lessons that employ the effective Cycle of Instruction
The pivotal feature of effective lessons is the conscientious effort, throughout the lesson, to ensure that all students are learning each segment of the lesson before moving to the next one.
31
Authentic Literacy The “spine” that “holds everything together” in all subject areas Purposeful- and usually argumentative- reading, writing, and talking Literacy is still the unrivalled, but grossly under- implemented, key to learning both content and thinking skills
32
The 3 Elements: POWER Points
The 3 Elements will do more than any other combination of efforts to ensure a record number of students learn and are prepared for college, careers, and citizenship. A content-rich curriculum, sound lessons, and authentic literacy would wholly redefine what public schools can accomplish w/children of every socioeconomic stratum. Implementation will benefit immeasurably when teachers work in teams (professional learning communities)
