1 Agenda Answer the bell work in your online notebook/journal (Google Doc that is shared with me) You be a Justice: Answer the questions on slide 3 by using the text on slide 4. These will also go in your online notebook/journal Cornell Notes on Judicial Branch: You will use the notes on slides 5, 6, and 7 to make Cornell Notes. You only need one summary at the bottom of the notes. These will be done on paper to turn in. Path to SCOTUS Gallery Walk: Follow directions on slide 8

2 Bell Work Write down three facts you already know about the court system and one question you have.

3 Supreme Court Scenarios
On the next slide, you will read one of two scenarios Your task is to discuss the scenario with a partner and record in your online journal / notebook What are the two sides of the argument? Which side do you agree with? Explain why - points given for those who use an Amendment in their answer :)

5 The Judicial Branch Interprets the Constitution by ensuring the gov. is playing by rulebook (Constitution) Hears disputes in civil and criminal cases Jurisdiction - extent of power Courts with original jurisdiction are those in which a case is heard first, usually in a trial. Lawyers can appeal legal decisions in an attempt to change the outcome. Courts with appellate jurisdiction hear cases brought to them on appeal from a lower court.

6 The Supreme Court Main Duties
Ensure uniformity in interpreting national laws Resolves conflicts between states Has both original jurisdiction and appellate jurisdiction *** Exercises judicial review by declaring unconstitutional acts of other branches or levels The Supreme Court

7 Life on the Bench Daily Life Hear cases
Debrief with other justices Cast votes and write opinions Side that wins majority of votes “wins,” becomes supreme law of the land. 9 justices who serve lifetime appointments 8 associate justices, 1 chief justice Appointed by President, approved by majority of Senate

šCases can go to Supreme Court from the federal or state level šTo learn about these two paths, there are two separate documents on my website Path to SCOTUS -Path to Supreme Court Notes šTake notes and answer questions using “Path to the Supreme Court Notes”. Draw the graphic organizer on a sheet of paper to turn in. Use the “Path to SCOTUS” to complete your organizer.
