Atoms are building blocks.
So, what were your “building blocks?”
Think of it this way…
If you want to create a language, you'll need an alphabet. If you want to build proteins, you will need amino acids. If you want to build molecules, you will need atoms of different elements. Each element is a little bit different from the rest. Those elements are the alphabet in the language of molecules.

2. Element Model Review Elements are the building blocks for all matter
We sometimes use the terms atom and element to mean the same thing. Remember that atom is the general term. Everything is made of atoms. The term element is used to describe atoms with specific characteristics.

3. Write down these definitions on page 9R (this may be a repeat but we need to be sure we are clear)
An atom is the smallest possible piece of that substance that retains all its properties.
An element is a name for a specific atom.
Examples – Gold, Aluminum, Iron
Elements are listed on the periodic chart.
A compound is a chemical species that is formed when two or more atoms join together chemically. Also known as a molecule.
