Founder: John Winthrop Year: 1630 Who colonized: Puritans Reason: Religious persecution and a failing wool industry Major works/events: “City Upon a Hill” speech & Salem Witch Trials. Place of the first Thanksgiving. Type of Government: Representative assembly: those who had ownership in stocks could participate in the government

3 Connecticut Founder: Thomas Hooker Year: 1639
Who colonized: Followers of Thomas Hooker Reason: Thomas Hooker and his followers were frustrated with their inability to find good land in Massachusetts and by the requirement that one must hold stock in the Bay Company in order to vote Major works/events: Fundamental Orders of Connecticut – America’s 1st written constitution Type of Government: Representative assembly: all adult men were allowed to vote for Governor and the General Court (legislature)

5 New York Founder(s): Originally the Dutch and it was called New Amsterdam. James of York (English) Year: 1614 but in it was taken over by the English in 1663 for fear that English colonist would smuggle goods out of New Amsterdam and not pay British taxes. Who colonized: Fur traders Reason: Fur traders Major works/events: The Dutch allowed people of all nationalities to settle so we see the first Jewish settlers and 1000 slaves. Who colonized: Quakers, and Natives Reason: Religious persecution who sought religious freedom Major works/events: Treaty of Shackamaxon – a treaty with the native people establishes the capital of Philadelphia Type of Government: Appointed a governor but allowed all men who owned land or pay taxes as long as they were Christian to vote for a legislative assemebly

9 North Carolina Founder(s): John White (Roanoke Island) and Nathaniel Batts Year: 1587 and then again in 1655 Who colonized: English Citizens. In Roanoke the colonists all disappeared Reason: Originially trade but then to find suitable farm land Major works/events: 1587 the first English child was born in the New World. The Lost Colony. Who colonized: Catholics Reason: Religious persecution Major works/events: In 1649, the Maryland Toleration Act was passed which guaranteed religious tolerance to settlers, as long as the religion was a sect of Christianity Type of Government: Royal Colony
