4 Common Core Strands RL.8.1 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. RL.8.3 Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.

6 Points to Consider (aka “Essential Questions”)
What are the elements of a story? What can the reader infer from line/paragraph (x)? Based on (paragraph x, line x), what can be inferred about (character/idea)? How does paragraph (x) help to develop the plot of the passage? What aspect of (character name)’s character is revealed throughout the passage?

8 But Remember… The Protagonist (Pro= for) is the main character who goes through a series of events (plot) in order to achieve some significant purpose or goal The Antagonist (Ant/Anti = against) prevents the protagonist from his or her goal

Resolution X Conflict = “The Problem”

10 What’s Next? Respond to both discussion questions (DQs), with a minimum of 75 words, using evidence from your notes and outside credible sources Blog sites or Wikipedia are NOT credible sources Respond to at least one other student either from your class or another group (50+ words) Engage them by asking a question first or “sandwiching” your approach Offer them insight as to how you arrived at your answer. This helps everyone grow 

11 Do Now DQ 1: In the first three paragraphs of the story the author establishes Squeaky as a character who is tough, outspoken, and athletic. Show specific details and language in the first page of this story in order to form a picture of Squeaky. DQ 2: Reread lines and notice that the author uses sentence fragments as a means to the story. What is the purpose of this style and what does it accomplish in your understanding of the story?
