1
Transgenic Animals Introduction
2
Techniques to develop transgenic animals
Started in the 1970,s and continued to improve. Become important tools for biomedical research Economical way to produce many human substances such as hormones In the future may help with organ procurement with transgenic organs decreasing the shortage of human organs for transplantation
3
Transgenic animal studies are helping to set the stage for gene therapy in humans
In regards to human organ rejection; Scientist have developed ways to hide some of the markers on pig organs so the human immune system does not recognize the pig organ as foreign.
4
Biotechnology is a collection of scientific techniques
Use living cells and molecules to make products & solve problems By using animals, plants and bacteria biotechnology allows us to enhance our health, our environment and our food supply
5
History For thousands of years humans have conducted selective breeding to improve our livestock Controlled plant pollination to produce better crops Microorganisms to bake bread Brew beer Make cheese
6
DNA & Biotechnology Transferring specific genes from one species to another
Allows for the production of microorganisms to produce human hormones: ex: insulin for diabetes Improve livestock and crops
7
Transgenic organisms defined
Organisms which contain other species genes within their chromosomes First transgenic organisms were bacteria; the simplest forms of life First studied by molecular biologist Advantages: Reproduce quickly by cell division called (mitosis) Easy to grow in Laboratory setting.
8
Pharmacy settings Produce human proteins such as insulin for diabetes
Human growth hormones for those humans deficient Interferon's for immunity, antiviral and possible treatment of certain cancer anticancer abilities
9
Potential of using transgenic techniques in animals can lead to:
Models for human disease Improve the quality and health of livestock Research and development of pharmaceuticals Source of organs for humans with lesser chance of rejection by humans immune system
