Earliest signs of occupation seem to date from C7th/6 th BC. Origins may be Oscan (local Italian people), Etruscan or Greek with Samnite participation. Earliest part of the town in SW corner. A flourishing town by late C3rd BC. Loyal to Rome during Hannibals invasion. Fought against Rome in the Social Wars 91-88 BC.
15
Besieged by Sulla and forced to surrender. Spared from destruction. Became a Roman colony – Colonia Cornelia Veneria Pompeiana. Governed by duumvirs and a town council. Damaged by an earthquake in AD 62. Rebuilding still in progress when the town was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79.
