Cannons had been used in warfare for hundreds of years but now cannon barrels were rifled
Rifled cannon barrels increased both accuracy and range
Artillery became a more important aspect of military

Telegraph had been in use for about 30 years by the beginning of the Civil War
Greatly improved communication between far off commanders
Leads to better ability to make plans at a distance

15,000 miles of telegraph were laid purely for military purposes
Telegraph wagons were developed for quick mobile communication

11. Photography By the 1860’s photography was widely used
This was the first majorly photographed war in U.S. history
Photographs helped spread information about the war back home
Provides excellent information source now

Mostly portraits and landscapes of battlefields were produced

Made people aware of the realities of war

Generally used for ramming wooden ships

The first successful sinking of a ship using a submarine took place during the Civil War
The H.L. Hunley(Confederate) managed to sink the USS Housatonic in 1864
It sank three times during the war, killing 21 crew total

25. Minie Balls A new type of bullet was widely used called Minie Balls
These were much quicker to load
Also more accurate to fire
Minie balls fired much faster than round musket balls

Minie balls were far more devastating than previous bullets
The way the minie balls hit people combined with poor medical technology lead to countless amputations during the war
Exact numbers amputations not known, but likely more than 60,000

The Union organized the Balloon Corp at the beginning of the war
Balloons were used to observe troop movements, numbers, locations, etc.
Disbanded by 1863
Were easy targets and Confederate forces began tricking balloon observers
