5 What about in schools? On the rise globally, particularly in the US, China and Singapore. Various educational institutions and technology companies sponsored programs and competitions Usually for secondary school, college and university ages but foundation skills and preparation can start in primary school More than just D&T, focus is on collaboration, invention and problem-solving

6 Why? Practical, hands-on, collaborative activities Problem-solving
Critical thinking Resilience Patience Better equipped to meet the needs of the future workplace Identify new passions Connect classroom lessons to real-world outcomes Increase student exposure to STEM subjects and technical disciplines

7 What do you need in school to make a makerspace?
“While many makerspaces contain sophisticated tools and technologies, they are not necessary to reap the learning benefits of making.” (NMC) It must be designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, tools and materials. Get the children to participate in designing and building their own makerspace!

8 DISCUSSION TIME! Do you think your placement school could include a makerspace right now? From what you know about the children in your class, would they enjoy it? What skills could be developed with the current resources in your placement school? What could be given as a focus or a problem for children to solve?
