9 After American Revolution
With the Treaty of Paris that ended the American Revolution, Great Britain ceded lands to the Mississippi River to the new United States. The territory northwest of the Ohio River became known as the Northwest Territory, which later became the states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan. 11 Louisiana Purchase The land included would have been described as the land in the western watershed of the Mississippi River (including the Missouri and Arkansas rivers). The land in the eastern watershed of the Mississippi River (including the Ohio River) had been ceded to Great Britain after the French and Indian War, and to the United States after the American Revolution.
