Ppdm and the api Early in 2009, the American Petroleum Institute (API) sought a new custodian for the API Well numbering standard, usually known as the “API number” or “D12A”. Based on the recommendations of industry operators and vendors, the custody of the well numbering standard has been transferred to the PPDM Association to update, enhance and carry forward. The PPDM Association has made a commitment to review and rewrite this standard for the US, and to make the revised standard publicly available, free of charge. Industry and regulators will be encouraged to adapt their systems to use the revised standard. Well Identification

Well identification workgroup
Working with its members and industry, the PPDM Association has organized a project to assess and update the well numbering standard. This project is being led by a work group which is vendor neutral and open to the public. In addition to specific US standards, the project scope includes global recommendations for well identification so that other countries can benefit from this effort. Well Identification

scope Establish business requirements for well identification.
Use the business requirements to develop a set of standards that can be applied on a global basis. Apply the well identification standards to review and revise the D12A well numbering standard. Develop a series of best practices for regulatory agencies, vendors and operators to adopt the revised D12A well numbering standard, and provide mechanisms that will facilitate this process. Where applicable, the best practices should be made relevant on a global basis (bi-product). Develop educational programs to communicate the new and updated standards definitions. PPDM 3.8

deliverables Global standard for well identification
Based upon a set of business requirements for well identification Build upon the work of the PPDM ‘What is a Well?’ initiatives A revised Well Numbering Standard that will supersede the current API D12A standard. A series of best practices for an adoption strategy by regulators, vendors and operators that addresses: Strategy for legacy, current, and future wells PPDM 3.8 21/11/2018

Budget & timeframe The budget for the Well Identification initiative is $250k. We have been successful in obtaining commitments for 80% of this and are working on the remainder Our goal is to complete the project by the end of The project plan is under review by the Steering Committee to determine whether or not this is feasible. Organization structure
Group Role PPDM Association Board of Directors Overall governance and oversight PPDM Association CEO Project planning and coordination, logistics and project stewardship Steering Committee (sponsors) The sponsors’ role is to act as an independent advisory group to define the project charter and ensure that stated goals and objectives are met. Working Group Help to develop the material that will become the Well Identification standard. Regulatory Provide feedback to the initiative from a regulatory perspective and communicate information back to other regulatory organizations. Reviewer Review technical content for accuracy, to propose alternatives, and to assess the potential industry impact and acceptance of decisions. PPDM Association Management of the project on an ongoing basis to ensure that the goals and deliverables are met within the defined timeframe and budget. PPDM 3.8 21/11/2018

What is a well? The WIAW project was sponsored by a number of E&P companies and data vendors to: Establish baseline definitions for well components across the well lifecycle Use this baseline as a foundation for comparison with key data sources Develop the baseline as a foundation for well data management The results of the project are available through an on-line interactive tool accessed through the PPDM web site. The tool is intended to facilitate communication and comparison Well Identification
17
WIAW: Baseline Definitions
Nine baseline definitions were established for a well and the components of a well: Well Set Well Well Origin Wellbore Wellbore Segment Wellbore Completion Wellbore Contact Interval Wellhead Stream Well Reporting Stream
18
WIAW: Baseline Definitions
Wellbore Completion Definition: A Wellbore Completion is a group of one or more Wellbore Contact Intervals that functions as a unit to produce or inject fluids. A Wellbore Completion must be capable of isolating a fluid flow for continuous measurement. Clarification A Wellbore Completion can span multiple Wellbores or Wellbore Segments and may consist of one or more Wellbore Contact Intervals. There are zero, one or more Wellbore Completions for each Well. One Wellbore Completion can span multiple reservoirs, and a single reservoir can flow into multiple Wellbore Completions. Communication: Definitions have been established for well and also well set which represents activities associated with the individual well over its lifecycle. Each well is then defined by 9 different well components from well surface (or origin) to wellbore interval. A well consists of two types of components: Physical and Logical Physical well components are the actual construction in the ground in order to access, move, and measure the flow of fluids. For example, the well bores and completions are physical parts of the well that are comprised of equipment and materials. Logical well components are the conceptual construction as they appear to the user in order to fulfill certain business requirements. For example, a production accountant calculates and reports volumes produced or injected in the well head stream for regulatory reporting, payment of royalties etc. However, the flow at the well head may not be measured as a single entity – it may be metered from a number of wells and allocated back or flows may be monitored from individual formations requiring aggregation.
19
Business requirements
Three types of business requirements have been identified: Common Business Requirements: These apply to any well identification scheme, regardless of geography, and legacy well numbering schemes US API Revision Requirements: These apply to any well numbering scheme which is proposed as a successor to (revision of) the current API D12a standard Best Practices: Describe how the well identification systems should be applied Well Identification
20
Business requirements
We have also distinguished between a ‘well identification system and a ‘well identification number’. A ‘well identification system is a set of information which uniquely identifies a component of a well. It may include multiple well identification fields and metadata. One should not assume a single identification field, or anything about the format of such a field (such as it being numeric) A ‘well identification number’ is a single field which labels a component of a well. The ‘well identification number’ typically has embedded semantic meaning. A well identification number does not necessarily meet all the requirements for a well identification system. Well Identification
21
Common Business requirements
A Well identification system must be capable of uniquely identifying the following Well components (See WIAW): Well Origin Wellbore Wellbore Completion Wellbore Segment Needs more discussion A well identification system should be non- exclusive, capable of uniquely identifying the supported components of any well, regardless of the fluid type (oil, gas, water, …) or the role of the well (produce, inject, service, …). PPDM 3.8
22
Common Business requirements
A well identification system should include metadata as to who created the identifier and when, to enable uniqueness globally. A well identification system should be capable of representing relationships between identified well components Well identifiers should only change under approved circumstances such as when a duplicate is identified. In these cases, a set of best practices for implementing the change should be followed. Metadata fields may be updated and corrected. Well identifiers should never be re-used once assigned, even if assigned by mistake Well Identification 12/15/2010

Next STEPS & Wrap UP Define the US API revision requirements
Complete a review of the existing D12A (gap analysis) Define the components of the revised API well identification system Get involved! We need input from all disciplines The Well ID project is open to anyone from industry There are multiple levels at which you can participate There is no fee requirement to participate (though it would be nice) Well Identification
