Symbolism in Disney’s Frozen
Delicately stolen from the mind of J. Derrickson and various websites

How would you describe the relationship between the two girls?
Video #1: How would you describe the relationship between the two girls? Think about snow…what do you think of snow? What do you think it would feel like? To what would you compare the feeling of snow? How do the girls feel when they are playing with the ice and snow? How do you know? Ana talks Elsa into playing a game, “Do you wanna build a snowman,” that they have clearly played before. They are having a great time until Ana, the innocent, daring young girl that she is, climbs too high and runs too fast for Elsa to keep up. Possible responses: Playful, they love each other and enjoy one another’s company, Elsa really cares about her sister, Elsa inadvertently hurts her sister while they are playing.

Task #1: Pay attention to the troll’s diction. How does he describe her power? Write down specific words/phrases that stand out. Also, notice the colors used to accentuate what he says. Task #2: Notice the father’s diction after Ana is “healed” by the trolls. How does he plan to handle the situation? Write down specific words and phrases. Diction: (Irrelevant)Troll: “the heart is not so easily changed, but the head can be persuaded” (this would make a nice exit tickt later: head vs. heart symbolism or maybe tie it in to that wretched Selena Gomez “The Heart Wants What it Wants” song.) Troll: powers of the cursed, your power will only grow, there is beauty in it, but also great danger, you must learn to control it, fear will be your enemy “Beauty” is emphasized by silver and blue (happy people around a teenage Elsa happily displaying her magic) “Danger and Fear” are emphasized by red and black (dragon-looking creature and mob of angry people, also reflected in Elsa’s eyes) Father: We will protect her: Lock the gates, reduce the staff, limit her contact with people, keep her powers hidden from everyone, even Ana. This type of protection is stifling. She is isolated. Her father teaches her to “conceal, don’t feel”…insinuating that she is not allowed to feel anything. When she puts on the gloves, she is not only hiding her powers, but hiding her true self. The gloves symbolize this oppression.

Symbolism of Gloves Video #3:
Symbolism of Gloves Of the themes and symbolisms in Frozen, the usage of gloves is among them, especially for two of the main characters: Elsa and Hans, who wear gloves for part and/or nearly all of the movie. Elsa conceals her true self by wearing the gloves in order to suppress her powers. When one glove is removed, she accidentally exposes her magic in front of people. Then when she sings, “Let It Go,” she removes the other glove. By this time, she no longer hides her true self and never wears gloves again for the rest of the movie. Hans also wears gloves when he is masking his true nature. When he privately reveals himself to Anna, he takes off one glove to extinguish a candle. After he puts the glove back on, he goes back to hiding his true self. Unlike Elsa, except for this one moment, he wears his gloves at all times, even when he is exposed at the end.

Taking off the gloves… Video #4:
When Elsa walks through the snow, her face is sullen and her eyes are downcast as she recalls all of the things her father told her, “conceal, don’t feel, don’t let it show.” When she takes off the gloves, Elsa abandons her father’s advice. She embraces her power and decides that nothing of her old life, with all of it’s rules and regulations, should ever haunt her again. The taking off of the gloves symbolizes Elsa’s desire for freedom and her refusal to conform. Video #4:
