1 Lesson 2: DNA/RNA structure, Triplet codes
Unit 18: Genetics Lesson 2: DNA/RNA structure, Triplet codes

2 Lesson Objectives To know the structures of DNA and RNA
To be able to translate DNA triplet codes into mRNA codons

3 Starter Activity Can you draw a DNA nucleotide?

4 DNA Nucleotide

5

6 What are the other bases called?
Adenine Thymine Guanine Cytosine Uracil

7 Bases: Adenine Guanine Cytosine Thymine PUrines Pyrimidines

8 How is RNA structure different to DNA?

9 RNA:

10 Protein Synthesis

11 mRNA = Messenger RNA

12 Protein Synthesis Overview:
Episodes 1, 3.

13 Transcription First stage of Protein Synthesis.
A section of the DNA molecule is ‘un-zipped’ This section is a gene.

14

15

16 Transcription: Once the DNA molecule has ‘exposed’ the gene by unwinding the DNA, transcription begins. Free nucleotides, begin matching up with base pairs on the DNA molecule to produce an mRNA strand. (Remember: RNA contains Uracil instead of Thymine.)

17 Base Pairings A T C G A U

18 Human Demonstration Pick a card…

19 Now a written exercise…
