5 The REAL Origin of Gargoyles
A gargoyle is a grotesquely carved human or animal figure found on an architectural structure. The word gargoyle comes from the French word “gargouille” which means “throat” or “Pipe”

7 When and Where? While gargoyles can be traced back 2000 years ago to ancient Greek and Roman architecture, gargoyles as we know them were very popular from the 11th to the 13th century in Europe and are often found as ornaments on medieval churches. This is called the Gothic period in architecture.

10 Purpose The original purpose of gargoyles was to drain water away from the sides of a building. Gargoyle rainspouts had very long necks, and protruding tongues. Also gargoyles were thought to scare off evil spirits.
