4 Bennett Buggy Bennett Buggy: car with horse attached. People did this because they did not have money to keep a car running (gas and repairs). The name “Bennett” was meant to refer to the Prime Minister (R.B. Bennett). People thought he was not doing enough to help people.

6 Relief Camps Relief Camps: government made special work camps throughout the country to keep people working. Workers made 20 cents per day.

8 Soup Kitchen Soup Kitchen: these were places where churches and charities handed out free soup to people. They had no money for their own food.

10 Dust Storms Much of the farmland in Canada and the United States experienced a severe drought in the 1930s. This was made worse by the fact that the land had been over- farmed for many years. As a result, there were dust storms in the prairie provinces (particularly Saskatchewan). This is period is often called the “dust bowl.” This added to the devastation of the Great Depression because farmers were not able to grow and sell crops.
