1 Teaching Mathematics Vocabulary
Grades K to 8 Welcome everyone to the workshop and display the first slide as a way to prime the pump and encourage more critical thinking about the topics.

2 Consider these questions:
How do you presently teach mathematics vocabulary in your classroom? How do you select your vocabulary words? Selecting Words How do you introduce mathematics vocabulary words? Introducing Words How do you know that your students know? Assessment What activities, resources or approaches do you use to reinforce mathematics vocabulary? Instruction Ask the participant to think about these topics. They do not have to answer any of them, we will discuss them throughout the workshop.

4 Why teach mathematics vocabulary?
“Vocabulary is a predictor of students’ comprehension” (Anderson and Freebody 1981; Nagy 1988) and content area learning (Espin and Foegen 1996). “Vocabulary is strongly correlated to reading comprehension” (Davis 1968; Fitzgerald and Graves 2005). “Lack of vocabulary knowledge can negatively affect learning content” (Fisher and Frey 2008). 1 2 3 Read each point. Explain that these quotations are referring specifically to math vocabulary. Ask the participants why they think that it is necessary to teach mathematics vocabulary.
