1 Proportion and Scale

2 Definition Proportion – Relationship of parts of the same object or the relationship between different objects in the same group. Scale – refers to the relative size of an object in relation to other objects.

3 Proportion: Important when selection and positioning furniture and accessories in a room. Examples: size of the lampshade fits the size of the lamp Parts of the same object or group

4 Scale Furnishing needs to fit the space they occupy
King sized bed would not work well in a small bedroom. Size of multiple objects in relation to each other

5 Golden Mean A line that visually divides an object or wall. The line falls between one-half and one-third from the bottom. That is a good place to tie back curtains or divide a wall with chair rail.

6 Good Ratios A sequence of numbers that progress by the sum of the two previous numbers. 2:3, 3:5, 5:8, 8:13, 13:21: 21:34

The scale of this bed is too large for the room. A twin sized bed would fit much better.

Supplies Needed: Picture of sofa in room Pencils Colored pencils Ruler Directions: Above the sofa, create a work of art (or a grouping of artwork) that is a good ratio. (Hint: If the sofa is 5” wide, how wide should the art be?)
