The Kirklands Journey Faculty development: Our implementation of the national outcomes framework for simulation based educators My focus is going to be on immersive simulation today pathways for clinical learning

NHS Lanarkshire Were we are -We SIT BETWEEN GG& C , LOTHIAN , and border forth valley ARYSHIRE & ARRAN Who we are -We began our simulation journey in 2010 when the medical education training Centre opened What we do -We deliver in excess of 80 immersive simulation courses annually Our initial faculty in 2010 a group of nurses and medics was 7 motivated individuals with varying degrees of paid education time. Our current core faculty of nurses medics is 26 motivated individuals with varying degrees of paid educational time Our associate faculty – soon to include AHP is approximately 30 not including visitors from other health boards. Since opening we have actively supported many clinician's interested in SBE to develop, some are now delivering SBE in other trusts ….. Our original algorithm pathways for clinical learning

How do we deliver this ? How do you simulate this scenario ? WERE do you start? pathways for clinical learning

Faculty development algorithm
Express interest in SBE Observe a session Attend a faculty development course Consolidate Were we began .....This works , it set clear lines The faculty development course had to be aligned to educational theory and recognised by a royal college or an educational institution preferably both ! however the consolidate element was subjective AND CHALLENGING TO DELIVER ! …. We used behavioural marker tools , during 2012 one of our ctfs lead a project developing a behavioural marker tool targeting faculty development… We spent 45min to an hour at the end of each course with new faculty coaching and supporting using video playback …. Peer review -All faculty are encouraged to discuss pre briefs and debriefs As faculty develop they are encouraged and supported to develop others…. Share experience knowledge and skills Important to acknowledge at this point there were no uk national simulation standards ,Our standards were based on SOCIETY FOR SIMULATION IN HEALTH CARE ( AMERICAN ) I - MOST EMBEDED STANDARDS( SHARED 2011/2012) pathways for clinical learning

National Outcomes Framework
Tier Descriptor 1. Awareness of Simulation to Educators 2. Introductory Programme for SBL Educator 3. Advanced Programme for SBL Educator REF 1 3 tiers – Each teir has high level objectives …. Each objective can be broken down and contextualised , The framework has been set out as a reflective tool…. it requires an opportunity to discuss objectives ….review and reflect on your skills Highlight your strengths /needs pathways for clinical learning

Governance Domains Academy of Medical Educators (AoME) Descriptors Domain 1 Design and planning learning activities Domain 2 Teaching and Supporting Learners Domain 3 Assessment and Feedback for Learners Domain 4 Education and Research and evidence base Domain 5 Education Management and Leadership Simulation is an Educational tool Each objective is linked to the relevant domain, each domain has several points. pathways for clinical learning

Pilot 2013/14 Clinical teaching Fellows (4) 2 simulation days …. 3 of 4 ….. Algorithm yes with a small change now the national framework is used to guide the consolidation period……. Enables objects to be achieved …. All teaching fellows working to ward pg cert in medical or professional education …. Also introduced behavioural markers framework for debreifing ( Observed structured assessment of debriefing –osad tool) Runnacles et al … How did it work request for evaluation of framework as part of ctf role … the tools were shared at the earliest point …..august with new ctf …. Discussion of expectations .. Ethos of learning within the centre …. The benefits and challenges of co facilitation …. What there aim was ? The same princples were adopted in 15/16 with very similar results 2 of the courses designed and delivered by ctfs are now embedded as part of core programme. pathways for clinical learning
