Key Terms

3 primary group Any group in which there is a close, face-to-face relationship.
nuclear family Husband, wife and children in one family. The “traditional” family.

4 modern family The traditional, nuclear family is called the modern family because it emerged with modern industrial society. postmodern family Today’s families, increasingly diverse.

5 extended family Families which include other relatives besides parents and children.
family values Values, such as togetherness, that focus on the family as a whole.

6 familism Placing family well-being over individual interests and preferences.
individualistic values Values that encourage people to think in terms of seeking primarily personal happiness as opposed to group happiness.

7 archival family function Families create, store, preserve, and pass on particular objects, events, or rituals that members consider relevant to their personal identities and to maintaining the family as a unique group.
