About Preachers It is a gift from God – Ephesians 4:8, 11-12
There is a great need God places great worth on his work – Romans 10:14-15 Preacher – announcer; evangelist – proclaimer of good news; minister – servant, teacher – not titles!

The qualities of a preacher
A Christian Disciplined 2 Timothy 2:24-26 – must not quarrel, gentle to all, able to teach, patient, humble Watchful – 2 Timothy 4:5 Faithful – 2 Timothy 2:2 A godly attitude Conviction

Do the work of an evangelist
2 Timothy 4:5 – It is a job! Evangelist – a proclaimer He has work to do – he answers to God Colossians 1:25 He will answer to the elders of the congregation 1) As a part of her 2) As a leader by his work 3) They support him to do the work

Preach the word 2 Timothy 4:1-5 –
Preach the word – proclaim the gospel. The whole counsel of God Acts 20:27, Matthew 28:20 Preach, “in season and out of season” – when pleasant and when unpleasant, whatever is needed. He cannot ignore certain subjects.

Convince – reprove - to convict, John 8:9, Ephesians 5:11, Titus 2:15 A preacher must present the truth on a given subject and PROVE it to be true. Prove why one needs to apply it

Rebuke – reprimand, denounce Matthew 16:22, etc. As Nathan rebuked David (2 Samuel 12:7); As Paul withstood Peter (Galatians 2:13-14) At times, a preacher needs to point out sins and make specific application. This is when preaching can be uncomfortable.

Exhort – to strongly urge, encourage. Matthew 16:22, etc. A preacher doesn’t end his message with exposing, he encourages and gives direction toward change.

Together, these are a process – Identify truth and error Make application as needed Encourage the necessary change (to build back up) He speaks with urgency – the time will come they will not endure sound doctrine…

Preach the word Preaching should:
Help brethren see the value of God’s word – 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Expose error – both the error and those teaching it (2 Peter 2:1-3, Ephesians 5:11) Expose unhealthy teaching – 1 Timothy 1:3-4

Call saints to godly living – Titus 3:1-2 Challenge complacency – cf. Romans 12:11 Seek to save souls – 1 Timothy 4:16

Mark those who cause division – Romans 16:17, Ephesians 5:11 Contend for the faith – Jude 3, 1 Peter 3:15, Ephesians 4:11-12 Restore the erring – James 5:19-20, cf. Galatians 2:11-14 Bring glory and praise to God – Galatians 1:10, 1 Peter 4:11

Tickling ears (cf. 2 Timothy 2:3-4) Politically correct Biased About what he wants to advance A tool to bully others About solving society’s problems

Preach the word A preacher must:
Study the word 2 Timothy 2:15, 1 Timothy 4:15-16 Give attention to reading – 1 Timothy 4:13, 15-16, cf. Joshua 1:8, Deuteronomy 17:18-19 Realize he is accountable – James 3:1, Matthew 12:36, etc. Love people – ALL people

Let no one despise your youth - 4:12, do not act to give cause for others to reject you – young or old! (examples – arrogance, favoritism, harshness, etc.)

In word – practice what you preach, respect for His word. Also keep your word and watch what you say (cf. Matthew 5:37)

In conduct – conversation (KJV) – one’s manner of life, you live as a Christian. Continue in them vs. 16 How often did Jesus condemn hypocritical behavior? If you want respect, live what you preach

In love – motivation behind what you do. In every relationship. Do you care? 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 Is love reflected in WHAT you say and HOW you say it?

In spirit – (not in some versions) – with control of passions. A good attitude with zeal.

In faith – trusting God and His word Romans 1: At the foundation – 2 Peter 1:5 You must believe what you preach to be true (conviction). You walk by faith… 2 Corinthians 5:7

In purity – unpolluted and undiluted. Living virtuous and morally. Living ABOVE the world’s standards Matthew 5:8 – pure heart 2 Timothy 2:22 – flee youthful lusts 1 John 3:3 – in hope he purifies himself as He is pure Consider the tragedy of scandals

Be an example A preacher needs to deal with all sorts of people – Christians and non-Christians, good and bad, strong and weak, stubborn, other preachers, elders, friends and enemies, family, etc. He needs to love people. He CANNOT isolate himself from the world OR his brethren and effectively do his job (NOTE: Brethren need to welcome him into their lives)

Fight the good fight 1 Timothy 6:12 We are at war with the devil. He needs to be in front and properly wearing the “armor of God” (Ephesians 6:10-18)

Fight the good fight 1 Timothy 6:12 He fights: - for the purity of the church - for true unity within the body (Ephesians 4:1-3) - against false teachers and their doctrines (Ephesians 5:11) - against worldliness and its influences - for the mind (2 Corinthians 10:4-6)

1 Timothy 4:16, Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine
1 Timothy 4:16, Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Let us seek one who stands before us who will preach what we need to hear rather than what we want to hear
