Section B: The 19th-century novel
Students will answer one question on their novel of choice. They will be required to write in detail about an extract from the novel and then to write about the novel as a whole.

Assessment objectives
Assessment objectives (AOs) are set by Ofqual and are the same across all GCSE English Literature specifications and all exam boards. The exams will measure how students have achieved the following assessment objectives.

Literature AO’s AO1: Paper 1 (15%) Paper 2 (22.5%) Overall weighting (37.5%) Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to: maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response Use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations. AO2: Paper 1 (15% Paper 2 (27.5%) Overall weighting (42.5%) Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate. AO3: Paper 1 (7.5%) Paper 2 (7.5%) ) Overall weighting (15%) Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written. AO4: Paper 1 (2.5%) Paper 2 (2.5%) Overall weighting (5%) Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation.
