5 A doctor of medicine Terentiy I
A doctor of medicine Terentiy I. Vyazemsky ( ) was a founder of the Karadag Scientific station. He started building the Station in 1907 and finished it in Now it is Karadag Natural Reserve. He passionately loved books and gathered them all his life. His private library consists of 45,000 volumes.

6 Description of the project
Interest to the private collections of rare books is rising nowadays. The book collection of doctor of medicine Terentiy I. Vyazemsky ( ) is one of not many private collections of pre-revolution Russia, survived to our days. It is considered one of the best private libraries of Russia and Ukraine. It numbers 45,000 documents (books, journals, proceedings, and maps), more than half of them are in foreign languages. Since 1907 they have been kept at the Karadag Scientific Station (now it is the Karadag Natural Reserve) and not studied yet. Terentiy Vyazemskiy bequeathed the collection to Karadag Natural Reserve with the request not to move it to another place. The collection has to be saved entirely. We intend to review the collection, improve its safety conditions, make restoration and preservation of the documents, digitize the collection and develop a website.

7 Until now the books have only been available on library shelves for individual use; digitization will provide and enhance discoverability and access for research and teaching. The library has suffered from lack of funds for proper storage facilities and staffing to catalogue older material. Many of the volumes are in danger of extinction within the next few years if they are not digitized and restored properly now. The Project will provide the impetus to review all rare books in the collections; record many of the rare books that are not currently recorded in the library catalogues/databases and primarily to make these unique volumes globally discoverable and accessible.
