Define Growth: A child’s physical increase in size or amount that is easily observed Define Development: The ability of a child to do things that are complex and difficult

Explain it and Examples of it Head to Foot (Cephalo Caudal) Infant needs to hold their head up before they can crawl Near to Far (Center to outside extremities) Infant needs to move their arm before they can move their fingers Simple to Complex Infant holds their head up, rolls over, crawls, and then walks

a. Growth and development is similar for everyone. b. Growth and development builds on earlier learning. c. Growth and development proceeds at an individual rate and time with each child. d. Growth and development is all interrelated. e. Growth and development is continual throughout life

PHYSICAL ***Develops most rapidly in the first 3 years
Examples Fine Motor = small muscles (hands/fingers) Gross Motor = large muscles (arms/legs) Lift head, roll over, creep, crawl, cruise, walk

Social Example Learning to get along/interact with others, move from self-centered to relating to others Child smiling at mother, learning to share a toy with a friend

Emotional Example The ability to recognize and express feelings, and establish a unique personal identity A child feeling jealousy of a new baby, a child feeling love for another person, being afraid of the dark

Cognitive Example How one learns, gains info, and understands the world around Brain development Language development A child recognizing their name, parent, when they shake a rattle it makes a noise

Moral Example Identifying right from wrong
Behaving according to what others need or want, respecting human rights, developing principles to guide behavior
