Materials of Construction
Generally, components are made of thin metal sections. These are very strong as long as: They retain the original shape They are not overloaded They are correctly secured Damage changes the components shape and thus reduces the load carrying capacity!

Design and Layout Aisle width must be compatible with the type of truck being used. Correct protection of exposed parts such as uprights and corners. Reduce the possibility of driver error Layout change may effect the weight bearing capacity.

Design and Layout The weight of the load is an important part of the design Clearance between the load and racking is important. Ensure there is space at the top of the loads when loading, especially at high levels. Ensure there is space at the sides

Safety Locks These are designed to prevent accidental dislodgment of beams.

Safety locks are designed to shear at a set upward force to prevent beams being lifted out vertically. These are small and cheap but critical. Never mix different designs

Reporting of Damage Why report damage?
Minor damage can weaken the structure. Damage needs to be actioned quickly so any delay in reporting could affect the safety of yourself or your work mates. Your actions could save a life!

Mistakes happen! Company Name has a culture which allows employees to report their mistakes openly.
You have a responsibility to report to management anything which in your opinion is hazardous.

When Damage occurs Report Damage immediately Off-load locations
Post signs to stop these locations being used Ensure remedial action is carried out ASAP Replace not repair!

Inspections Regular inspections should be carried out on all racking.
12 month inspection must be carried out by a competent person Each inspection should be recorded and signed

Operations Maximum weight must not be exceeded Loads must be stable
Pallets must be in good condition
