The Freshman Transition
Many students find themselves struggling in English 1 when they haven’t struggled in English before Writing: More analytical; less narrative Reading: More analytical; less comprehension Work load: More quality; less completion Block scheduling: leads to procrastination and forgetfulness Heavier work load, faster pace

How to succeed in this environment: Complete all homework the night it is assigned Come in outside of class time to ask questions & get clarification To do that, complete homework on the night it’s assigned Understand that an A is achievable in this class, but will require hard work. It is not a given.

Other Helpful Items I do not check email outside of school hours.
Remind - only for occasional notices to students. Not for daily homework notices. One way communication. Turnitin.com. students must use website to submit many assignments and for peer editing. *school library 7:30-4, including lunch* *HELP Center in C-111 until 4:45 Monday through Thursday* Make use of my teacher website, please Due dates, daily agenda, PPTs and handouts are there. *does not replace planner and/or student responsibility.

What do your students need?
They need to be given responsibility and accountability Let them take the consequences for their actions If they are struggling or are having any issues relating to the class, send them to me to discuss it Time management is crucial Do you know how to help with Patriot Plus? minutes or one hour, depending on the week. Sign up in advance, use the sessions! Ask your student about the PP class they signed up for each week.

Notable Policies Late homework – 4 One day late passes and then No late homework is accepted for credit Work that is not turned in will show up as MISSING – a red blank box. Projects and essays receive 10% deduction for each day they are late. Absent work is accepted, but it’s the responsibility of your student to find out what they missed and how to make it up. Tests that were given on a day your student was absent must be made up within one calendar week of the original date; then scores will convert to 0.
