Why was the Battle of Antietam significant? What happened at the Battle of Vicksburg that changed the war?

8 What does “Reconstruction” mean?
In this case, it refers to the period where the US attempts to rebuild the South

9 Things the Government must figure out during Reconstruction
How to treat former Confederate leaders? Forgive them and be lenient or punish them? How to admit Confederate states back into the Union? Are there things the government should require them to do? What to do with the 4 million emancipated slaves? What new rights should be given to them? How will Southern property and economy be restored?

10 Lincoln’s plan for Reconstruction
President Lincoln and Vice President Andrew Johnson wanted to reunify the nation after the war

11 Lincoln’s Ten Percent Plan
Lincoln’s Ten Percent Plan- only ten percent of each state had to take oath to the Union to be forgiven

12 Radical Republicans oppose Lincoln
Many Radical Republicans felt Lincoln was too lenient on the South Felt that the Confederacy committed a crime by leaving the union

13 Wade- Davis Bill Wade-Davis Bill- required that a majority of a state must pledge allegiance to the union before being brought back into union

13th Amendment- Ended the practice of slavery 14th Amendment- Granted freed people citizenship 15th Amendment- Protected a citizen’s right to vote regardless of race

To help newly freed slaves, the Freedman’s Bureau helped them find shelter, food, and education

17 Jim Crow South Begins… South still aimed to limit the rights of African Americans Black Codes- laws designed to limit African Americans rights Jim Crow Laws- established segregation in the South

Due to tensions between the North and South after the war... John Wilkes Booth assassinates Abraham Lincoln at Ford Theater on April 15, 1865 Vice President Andrew Johnson becomes the 17th President of the United States Greatly angers Radical Republicans in Congress

Andrew Johnson is impeached by violating the Office of Tenure Act Impeachment- to charge the President of a crime Real Reason: The Radical Republicans of Congress hated him Felt he was too lenient on the south

27 End of Reconstruction In the Election of 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden tie in the electoral college. Compromise of Rutherford B. Hayes is made president and ends Reconstruction and in exchange… a. Military protection must leave South b. Government must build a southern transcontinental railroad c. Ex-confederates allowed into government again
